Guest lecture on “Practical Application of Microservice Architecture” by Risto Kavalinovski and Viktor Kajtazov (Nion)

As part of the Service-Oriented Architectures course, two guest lectures dedicated to the practical application of microservice architecture will be held by Risto Kavalinovski, software architect and IT consultant, and Viktor Kajtazov, Software Engineer and Java Domain Manager at Nion.

Microservices in the real world: from enterprise platforms to agentic systems
This lecture covers the practical application of microservice architecture through two real industry implementations: a large enterprise transformation and an IoT startup platform. 
The first example covers the transition from a legacy monolithic system to a domain-oriented microservice platform in a large organization working according to SAFe processes and the tribes and squads model. The lecture will examine organizational alignment, domain ownership, team scalability, integration challenges and architectural trade-off decisions that arise in real projects.
The second example is a microservice-based IoT platform developed by a small core team around MQTT-connected devices, with a focus on provisioning, data ingestion, CRM integrations and customer-facing API services. This example will show that microservices are useful not only for large organizations, but also for managing complexity and system extensibility from the early stages of development.
The lecture additionally connects the classical principles of microservice architecture with modern agentic architectures and MCP (Model Context Protocol) approaches, emphasizing the importance of bounded contexts, API contracts, loose coupling and single source of truth concepts in systems intended to be used and orchestrated by AI agents.
The goal of the lecture is to bridge theoretical principles with real architectural decisions, practical experiences and future directions in the design of modern software systems.
Practical examples and tools from microservice architecture
The lecture covers the tools, principles and real challenges faced by engineering teams when developing microservices within a large company.
Through concrete examples, we will see how microservices are organized by business domains, how teams coordinate through clear boundaries of responsibility, and how specific technical problems are solved using a microservice approach.
About the lecturers
Risto Kavalinovski is a software architect and IT consultant with experience in enterprise platforms, microservice architecture, IoT systems and distributed integrations. He has worked on large transformation projects in the telecommunications sector, as well as on modern IoT platforms based on MQTT communication, cloud-native services and event-driven architectures. His experience includes solution architecture, technical leadership, presales activities, API and integration design, as well as mentoring and development of engineering teams. He has a special interest in scalable distributed systems, domain-oriented architecture and the intersection between microservice architectures and modern agentic AI systems.
Viktor Kajtazov is a Software Engineer and Java Domain Manager at Nion with more than 10 years of experience in developing enterprise Java systems. He has worked as a consultant on projects across several domains, including telecommunications, healthcare, retail and media, gaining broad experience in large organizations and agile environments.
