History

The Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (FINKI) is the result of the merger of the two largest institutes in the field of informatics and computer engineering in Macedonia: the Institute of Informatics (II) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the Institute of Computer Engineering and Informatics (ICTI) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies.

In this form, the two institutes have been operating since the 1980s. The Institute of Informatics began operating in 1985 as an equal constituent unit of the reunified Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics under the name Institute of Informatics. The Institute of Computer Engineering and Informatics originated from the Department of Technical Cybernetics, which in 1982 first became a division and later an institute.

Over a period of nearly 30 years, these institutes experienced continuous growth in scientific and technical capacity, as a result of the exceptional commitment of their members and in line with the global rise of informatics. The growing interest of students in this field, together with the increasing development and opportunities of the two institutes, led them in recent academic years to become the largest institutes at their respective faculties, serving almost 50% of the students.

Throughout their development, there have been many joint projects and research activities, both on a personal and institutional basis. The two institutes were constantly striving for higher quality in studies, scientific research and applied work. This pursuit ultimately resulted in a unifying factor: the increasingly significant development and rise of informatics in Macedonia, and the formation of an exceptionally strong community of teaching staff focused on informatics. Since 2011, they have formally continued on a shared path as the strongest and most advanced scientific-research and educational institution in Macedonia in the fields of informatics: the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (FINKI).
