About Slice

Slice is on a mission to keep local thriving. Founded in 2016 by Ilir Sela to arm independent pizzerias with the modern tools that big pizza chains enjoy, Slice today empowers over 20,000 local pizza shops (and the families behind them) to succeed in the digital era. Local pizzerias already outperform the big chains offline, but they’re outsold 20-to-1 online – Slice is here to close that gap and level the playing field for small shops. When a pizzeria partners with Slice, it should feel like they’ve “just hired 1,000 people” to support their business. In short, this isn’t just about writing code – it’s about writing the future of local pizza.

What You’ll Do

As a Software Engineering Co-op on our Services team, you won’t be fetching coffee or doing busy work – you’ll be shipping real code that matters from day one. Here’s what you can expect to dive into:
- Build Innovative Features & Services: Design, code, and launch new backend features to help our pizzeria partners run more efficiently and deliver exceptional customer experiences. Your projects will directly enhance real-world interactions between local shops and pizza lovers.
- Spot Game-Changing Opportunities: We encourage you to look for creative, high-impact improvements where a small technical tweak can deliver disproportionate value. Bring an entrepreneurial mindset to find 10x solutions that delight users and give our partners an edge.
- Own Projects End-to-End: Take ownership from concept to production. You’ll work closely with product and design teams to define solutions, execute rapidly, and iterate based on feedback. If you see a problem, you won’t wait – you’ll tackle it head-on.
- Use the Best Tools for the Job: Our primary stack is Python (Flask), but we embrace whatever technology delivers the best result. You might refactor a microservice from Go to Python, write a quick automation script in Ruby, or leverage a new AWS service – whatever it takes to solve the task at hand in a scalable way. (In other words, you should be comfortable with Python, Go, or Ruby and excited to learn any technology needed.)
- Collaborate in a Tight-Knit Team: Join a small, agile team of 5–8 backend engineers spread across the US, UK, and EU who are just as passionate about the mission as you are. You’ll pair program, review code, brainstorm ideas, and push each other to raise the bar – all in a supportive, fun atmosphere that values learning and bold ideas.
- Ensure Quality at Scale: At Slice, you build it, you own it. You’ll follow best practices in coding, testing, monitoring, and DevOps to ensure your services are reliable and performant. From writing unit tests to fine-tuning logging and alerts, you’ll make sure your code runs smoothly in production. This is real-world, real-impact engineering.

- Strong Coder & Quick Learner: You have solid programming skills demonstrated through projects, internships, or coursework. Experience with Python, Go, or Ruby is a big plus (our core backend languages), and you can pick up new languages or frameworks on the fly to get the job done. You’re not afraid to dive into databases, APIs, or unfamiliar code – you learn fast and adapt.
- Team Player with Communication Skills: You excel at collaborating in a team setting. Whether working with a fellow intern or a senior engineer across the globe, you communicate clearly and respectfully. You’re comfortable asking for help, receiving feedback, and contributing your own ideas in a distributed (often remote) team environment.
- Product & Customer Focus: You care about the “why” behind your code. You think about how a new feature will impact a mom-and-pop pizza shop and its customers. You’re eager to propose improvements, and you value others’ perspectives, knowing that the best ideas can come from anywhere.
- Creative Problem Solver: When faced with a tough problem, you get innovative. Uncharted territory excites you. You look for those asymmetric win scenarios and aren’t afraid to experiment, fail, learn, and iterate to find a better solution. You love tinkering and finding clever solutions that others might miss.
